Psychotherapy - Choosing the Right Psychotherapist

Psychotherapy is a general term for the treatment of a behavior disorder, mental illness, or any other condition by psychological means.

Psychotherapy may utilize insight, persuasion, suggestion, reassurance, and instruction so that patients may see themselves and their problems more realistically and have the desire to cope effectively with them.

There are many different orientations of psychotherapy, including brief therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, psychodynamic or psychoanalytic therapy, marital therapy, interpersonal therapy, child (play) therapy, family therapy, music therapy, and so on.

Which orientation is right for you may depend on your personal preference and on the personality of the therapist, as much research supports the notion that one orientation is not superior to any other, and that instead the effectiveness of therapy depends more on the therapist’s and the patient’s belief in the therapeutic orientation they are using, whichever orientation that happens to be.

Other research indicates that long term psychotherapies such as psychodynamic therapy may be more effective than shorter term therapies that as cognitive behaviour therapy, in particular for more serious personality or character disorders.

The best strategy in choosing the right therapy orientation for you is to meet with several therapists of different persuasions for a least two or three sessions and evaluate which therapist you fit with best. It is this fittedness between therapist and patient, which can depend more on the personal factors of both participants and less on theoretical orientation, that may ultimately determine the success of your treatment.
